Width Measurement and Alarm System for Modern Automation

The customer wanted to measure the width of a web of a product as it was
being manufactured. The product varied between 50 to 300mm wide and could
wander a few mm over the rollers when it was being manufactured. The
customer also wanted a simple display to:

1. Display the measured value before running and
2. Give an alarm if the width was + or – 1mm, by pushing one button.

A pocket line sensor, measuring reflector and a panel meter were supplied.
The sensor’s reflector was mounted between two rollers so the material
travelled between the sensor and its reflector. The sensor measures how much
of its reflector is covered, giving an analogue output to a panel meter. The
panel meter displays the measured value of the web, then by pushing a button
it forces the display to zero. This allows the use of the deviation alarms on the
panel meter.
