May 21, 2012 - PRLog -- Zeus Global UK recently reported that charities were worried about the effect of potential caps on charitable giving. The biggest donors may face a limit on the amount that they are allowed to give to charity in an effort to cut down tax evasion. At the other spectrum of the giving scale there appears to be much less cause for concern. Zeus Global UK was delighted to learn that charity shops are experiencing a boom, believed to be down to the recession.

Direct sales and marketing company Zeus Global UK works with some of the biggest charity clients in the UK and were incredibly pleased to learn that rather than suffering at the hands of the recession, high street charity shops are actually enjoying a significant rise in sales. The annual income for UK charity shops has hit a record-breaking high as it has surpassed £1 billion for the first time, an increase of 34 per cent on the previous year. Zeus Global UK understands that the Charity Retail Association (CRA) found that young mothers with children are the biggest users of charity shops as they use it to find second hand clothes and toys.

Managing director of Zeus Global UK, Chris Huckfield, expressed his pleasure, but not surprise at the news. “This is absolutely fantastic for all charities, not just the ones that we represent. I’m not particularly surprised. As the recession has caused people to take greater care of their money it makes sense that they would have a look in charity shops for a bargain. There has been a steady increase in the number of visits to charity shops, particularly when shops like Oxfam started to stock 2nd hand designer goods that were donated to them. People are very generous with their donations to charity shops and people can get some really great deals.”

Zeus Global UK also learnt that there is another more worrying side effect of the recession. Rather than donating to charity shops people are more likely to put their unused items onto auction sites like eBay where they can make some money from the sale. This has caused a supply crisis in many charity shops. Mr. Huckfield concluded, “When the demand is as great as it is, this is a cause for concern. At Zeus Global UK we would encourage people to continue to give a portion of their high-quality unwanted goods to charity shops as just one form of giving to charities. If the want is there by customers, as it clearly is, then your donations will be a huge help to your chosen charity’s fundraising.”
