The screenings will feature two notable award-winning films about surfing's globalization and professionalization, followed by two discussion panels. Bustin' Down the Door (directed by Jeremy Gosch and co-produced by Shaun Tomson, Monika Gosch, and Rob Traill) recounts the story of a group of Australian and South African surfers who revolutionized surfing, but caused considerable tension with local Hawaiian surfers when they arrived in Hawaii during the winter of 1975. Rarely screened Sea of Darkness (directed by Michael Oblowitz and produced with Martin Daly and Rob Taylor) is a dark tale about a group of surfers who blazed a trail of adventure, self-discovery, mysticism and drug-running throughout Bali, Java and other, more remote parts of Indonesia, ultimately opening up this part of the Pacific to the global expansion of the surf industry. "The globalization of surfing and the development of a global surf industry over the past four decades transformed surfing from a counter-culture to a culture of professionalization. Though never losing its sense of free-spirited adventure, surfing's globalization was also implicated in the critical challenges of globalizing forces more generally. UCHRI is excited to partner with some of the seminal figures in and commentators on these developments to explore their impact on surfing and our world more generally," said UCHRI director David Theo Goldberg. The films will be followed by Q and A with Shaun Tomson and Michael Oblowitz, as well as by two panels of speakers reflecting on the periods the films describe, some of whom played central parts in each of the events. Panelists include Reno Abellira, Ian Cairns, Greg Escalante, Jeremy Gosch, Fred Hemmings, Paul Holmes, Jim Kempton, Jericho Poppler, Rory Russell, Tom Stone, Michael Tomson, and Peter Townend. The program will run from 12:30pm to 7:00 pm, including refreshments and followed by a light dinner reception at the Fowler Museum. The program is free and open to the public, seating on a first come basis. The University of California Humanities Research Institute (UCHRI) serves all ten campuses in the UC system to promote collaborative, interdisciplinary humanities research and pedagogy throughout the University of California system and within the larger communities they inhabit. The Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on works from Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas-past and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples, cultures, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions, publications, and public program.
