May 17, 2012 - PRLog -- May 17, 2012 Toronto, Ontario, BD Marketers Press Inc. is proud to present the official launch of Read It with a Grain of Salt – The Truth about Canadian Food Labels from an Industry Insider by author Allison Jorgens. This 181 page soft cover book is listed at $19.95, ISBN 978-0-9879563-0-9, and is available on Amazon.ca and via the books website http://www.grainofsalt.ca.

Given recent media coverage on the Federal budget reductions for the Canadian Food and Inspection Agency (CFIA), the federal agency responsible for governing food safety, including the monitoring and enforcement of food labels – combined with the recent expose on “Lousy Labels” by CBC Marketplace in their February 2012 episode “10 misleading food product labels in Canada” this non-fiction book could not have been more timely as Canadians grapple with how to protect themselves from the manipulative marketing tactics seen through the food industry.

The book provides an insider’s look into tricks of the trade used by food companies to market their products. Written in an approachable and easy-to-understand manner from the unique perspective of an industry insider, this book explains the fundamentals of food labels, provides an overview of the “grey areas” within the regulations, and exposes the top misleading components where consumers often fall victim to manipulative marketing.
Within the book are a series of useful callouts and highlighted sections including, “Did you know?”, “Caution!”, “Quick Tip”, and “The Inside Scoop”; the latter of which provides an insider’s password to access a dedicated resource section on the book’s website which provides additional resources and examples to help readers further educate and empower themselves on the ins and outs of reading food labels.

Allison Jorgens, is a Professional Home Economist holding a degree in nutritional sciences. She has been working as a food label specialist for grocers and food manufactures in Canada for nearly a decade. Over the past ten years, Allison has reviewed thousands of food labels for many of Canada’s leading private-label grocery brands, large and small manufacturers, distributors, and a variety of importers. It is this wide-ranging experience in regulatory-compliance label reviews that makes her knowledge unique—and her perspective all the more shocking.

In talking with the author, her call to action is for Canadians to empower themselves with the information needed to make more healthful and informed choices when it comes to purchasing prepackaged processed foods.  “It will amaze and perhaps even shock you to find out how much you may not know about the foods you have been eating all your life!” says Allison Jorgens.
