Follow on Google News | Klamath Museum Offers Far Corners ProgramKlamath County’s most remote regions will be the focus of a new program being presented for the coming summer months by the Klamath County Museum.
By: www.discoverklamath.com “We often like to boast that Klamath County is bigger than some states. This is our chance to get to know some of the more lonely parts of our own county,” said museum manager Todd Kepple. “Some of our lesser-known secret spots that often get overlooked would rank as huge attractions in other parts of the nation that are more scenically-challenged than we are.” The first activity in the Far Corners program is a May 26 auto tour that will circle around Mount Dome, an isolated peak that figured prominently in the Modoc Indian War of 1872-73. “We’ve obtained permission to cross private lands on a rugged dirt road that rarely sees any traffic,” Kepple said. “This trip will be fascinating for anyone who considers themselves a serious student of the Modoc War.” A bus tour scheduled for June 26 will also focus on the Modoc War, including the opening day of the conflict when soldiers attempted to arrest a group of Modocs, and 14 white settlers in the Malin area were subsequently killed by some of the Modocs. The first hike on June 9 will lead past striking geologic formations in the Deming Creek drainage in the Gearhart Mountain Wilderness Area. Later outings will take participants in other directions from Klamath Falls. Most activities are free, though fees may be charged for bus trips. Space is limited for all activities in the Far Corners program, and registration is required for each event. “We’re especially looking forward to exploring the many attractions in northern Klamath County,” Kepple said. “There’s a tremendous amount of history, geology, leisure and scenery to check out in the lakes country up there.” Some of the trips, such as the May 26 outing to Mount Dome, will stray across the county line to visit sites that played a critical role in Klamath history, Kepple said. The Far Corners program will include at least four bus trips, for auto tours and four backcountry hikes to accommodate people’s varying interests and different types of sites. “Many of our historic sites are found right beside the pavement, while others can only be reached by four wheel drive or on foot,” Kepple said. “This program will allow everyone to participate in some type of history outing, regardless of their age or ability.
