International Surf Lifesaving Association (ISLA) Announces Winners of Junior Lifeguard Scholarship

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – On May 14, 2012, the International Surf Lifesaving Association (ISLA) announced the winners of their first Junior Lifeguard Scholarship for the Junior Lifeguard program at Huntington Beach, California.

May 14, 2012 - PRLog -- Founded in 2008, ISLA’s mission is to reduce the number of drownings worldwide by building a culture of water safety. Comprised of volunteer lifeguards, the organization provides training, medical supplies, disaster relief, and emergency personnel to beach communities around the world.

As a new initiative to promote water safety, ISLA created a scholarship for youths to participate in a Junior Lifeguard Program. The ISLA Junior Lifeguard scholarship is designed to introduce the world of lifeguarding to someone who has dreams of a career in Marine Safety, Oceanography, or Marine Biology and who would benefit from experiencing the educational program. The award of this scholarship is intended to provide the Junior Lifeguard experience to a child that would normally not participate in such a program, due to his/her location of residence and financial cost. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage achievement of a stated goal, whether as a lifeguard or in another ocean related field of study.

ISLA announced the Junior Lifeguard Program and the scholarship winners on May 14, 2012; Richard Ramirez and Gabriela McCain. Richard is twelve years old, from Montebello, California. Gabriela is fifteen years old, from Costa Mesa, California. Both winners will be participating in the Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguard (HBJG) program.

The Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguard (HBJG) program was established in 1963 to educate children on the oceanic environment, First Aide, C.P.R., and lifesaving methods. The scholarship is for the HBLG 8-week program. The eight week course starts June 25, 2012 and ends August 16, 2012.

“This is ISLA’s first scholarship opportunity and we are looking forward to working with Richard and Gabriela,” said ISLA President Henry Reyes. “It is a great feeling to be able to help educate the youth in our community.”
