Field Added to Rapidly Growing List of Cities Served By Soccer for Success in 2012

May 9, 2012, Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, and KIPP DC, grant recipient of the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Annual Grants program, will hold an event to celebrate the grand opening of newly renovated Bundy Athletic Field. The latest field-building project in the District marks another milestone in the national expansion of the Soccer for Success program developed and run by the Foundation. At present, hundreds of children participate in Soccer for Success at 14 sites throughout the District. On a national level, the Foundation currently serves 8,000 children in eight cities with expansion plans to serve 15,000 children in 18 cities.

KIPP DC will implement the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s after-school program, Soccer for Success on Bundy Athletic Field this fall.  They will join District program operators, YWCA National Capital Area and United for D.C., D.C. United’s charitable arm.

“We are very pleased to add another field to our hometown,” said Ed Foster-Simeon, President & CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. “We are particularly thrilled that KIPP DC is going to use this field to implement Soccer for Success -- a program that provides children with physical activity, nutritional information to combat obesity and mentoring to develop important life skills. Our goal is to use soccer as a vehicle for youth development and social change in communities throughout the District and across the nation.”

“KIPP DC is excited about the renovated Bundy Athletic Field and is proud to be part of the Soccer for Success program,” said Susan Schaeffler, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of KIPP DC.  “This is a program which enriches the lives of everyone who takes part in it -- the teachers, parents, coaches, and, most importantly – the students.  By offering daily physical education classes and innovative after-school programming on a state-of-the-art field, we can create change in our community and impact the lives of children in the area.”

The Bundy Athletic Field opening event will be held on Saturday, May 12 from 1-3:30p.m. at the 400 block of P Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.  Special guests include Ed Foster-Simeon, President & CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Susan Schaeffler, Founder and CEO of KIPP DC and Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells.
