Follow on Google News | Flash Set Out To Upstage Ambassadors This Mothers DayThe Flash remain undefeated after the first round of their conference schedule and are on the hunt for another three points this weekend against the Bay Area Ambassadors.
By: Staff This past Saturday, the players were in the Cinco De Mayo mood on their return to Del Norte High and gave supporters reason to celebrate with a 3-0 victory, 2 penalty saves in regulation time and even a marriage proposal from a former Flash player! There was great back and forth play from both sides in the first 40 minutes of the match. Then suddenly, goals from David Bakal (42’) and Brennan Tennelle (45’) had the Flash up 2 - 0 at the half. A goal by Flash Captain Nelson Pizzaro in the final 15 minutes finished it off for the ever confident 2011 conference champions. However the game belonged to goalkeeper Nick Harpel. He had a Man of the Match performance on the back of a clean sheet with several key saves against the highest scoring team in the league. His performance was made even more remarkable by not one, but two penalty saves. The result had Head Coach Warren Barton singing his teams praises and looking forward to the challenges of competing with their Conference North counterparts. “The past two matches have been defining moments for our season. We have clinically put away our two strongest challengers on the back of hard work and a lot of heart. “I am seeing a playing group that truly believes in each other’s ability and will fight right up to the 90th minute to force a result. The attitude of the players is fantastic and this was evident in the weekend’s game against the (Santa Clarita) Storm. “But I am cautious that we are only a third of the season down and there are many more games to be played” Barton said. The next phase of the NPSL season will be the most difficult with away matches involving extended periods of travel and against some of the West Conferences northern teams. “If we continue the form we have shown over the first five games and pick up wins on the road then we will be well placed to challenge for the title at the end of the season. “My challenge to the team is to find that extra gear to power through the middle part of the season and show the rest of the conference that we mean business this year” Barton said. The Flash remain at home this weekend (Del Norte High 16601 Nighthawk Lane, San Diego, CA 92127) against the Bay Area Ambassadors. Fans should note that this weekend’s game will be on Sunday May 13 at 1pm and a will feature a tribute to Soccer Moms in San Diego. For ticket information visit www.SanDiegoFlashSoccer.com End
