Drumming to Beat Cancer!

May 19, 2012, Remo Recreational Music Center, in North Hollywood, will be transformed from a drum factory outlet into a throng of rhythmic drummers.  May 19, 2012 marks the sixth annual drumSTRONG fundraiser.  The mission: drum out cancer.

This year, while hundreds will drum for two hours in a studio in North Hollywood, countless others will be simultaneously drumming in 50 cities across more than 15 countries, including Japan, Ukraine, India, Germany, England, Canada, Kenya, Hong Kong, Italy, Malaysia, Slovenia and the United Arab Emirates.  In North Carolina, the home state of drumSTRONG, thousands will be drumming for 29 hours, an effort to beat the 28-hour world record set last year by drumStrong.

Talent of celebrity musicians will be donated by Alphonse Mouzon, Richie Garjate Garcia, Munyungo Jackson,  Remo Belli and Gino Gamboa.  Drum facilitators will set the beat, Remo Recreational Music Center will provide the drums.  Participants only need to bring their enthusiasm. Experience or talent is completely unnecessary. Everyone can drum and fun is absolutely guaranteed.

The event is open to everyone of all ages.  Doors will open at 12:00 p.m.  Drumming will begin at 1:00 p.m. The cost is a donation of $25 a person, or $50 a family. Proceeds go to local and global cancer-fighting initiatives.  This year’s recipients will be LiveSTRONG and UCLA Simms/Mann Center for Integrative Oncology, and weSPARK.   LiveSTRONG provides free support services for people living with cancer, from dealing with insurance companies to finding clinical trials.  UCLA Simms/Mann and weSPARK provide free counseling for patients and families undergoing treatment for cancer.

drumSTRONG was founded by Scott Swimmer after his 12 year old son was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, cancer of the bone.  Swimmer wanted to find a way for cancer patients to participate in fundraising.   Chemotherapy and radiation can make it difficult to participate in traditional fundraisers of running a 10 K or biking 65 miles.  Drumming is a way for everyone to participate.  Swimmer created drumStrong to be a conduit for important cancer-fighting health initiatives all over the world.

Remo Music Center is located at 7308 Coldwater Canyon, North Hollywood,CA    91605    Phone 818- 982-0461.   website:  www.drumstrong.com
