May 3, 2012 - PRLog -- Las Vegas Philanthropist and Public Relations Professional Mary B. Vail, OSG was presented the 2012 Make A Difference Day Award for her annual food drive as part of the nationwide charity event.  Vail’s project was one of thirteen volunteer initiatives recognized at the awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., on April 19th where Kevin Bacon, actor, musician and founder of served as the event’s keynote speaker.

Make A Difference Day, the nation’s largest day of service, was created in 1992 by Gannett Co., Inc.’s USA WEEKEND Magazine along with partners, Newman’s Own®, Inc. and Points of Light.  In addition to recognizing the winners for their standout programs,  Newman’s Own donated cash prizes totaling $130,000, awarding ten volunteer initiatives $10,000 each and presenting three cities $10,000 each for their local projects.

After a lengthy review and interview process, Vail was chosen from thousands of grassroots volunteer efforts across the US that took place on the October 22, 2011 Make A Difference Day.

“Many across the globe think of Vegas as a place to cut loose, party and celebrate life,” notes Vail.  “What they don’t realize is that we are a community with the same needs and challenges as any city; with unemployment, the homeless, and the less fortunate. Vegas was hit extremely hard with the downturn in the economy.”  

Committed to making a positive impact in the Las Vegas community, she has hosted the food drive for the past 13 years at Smith’s Food & Drug to benefit the Las Vegas Salvation Army Food Bank.     Over the years, many noted celebrities, strip entertainers, professional dancers, award winning film makers, pageant queens and media personalities have lend their support to the cause including internationally known Robin Leach, X-Factor contestants Equality, sports star Napoleon McCallum, REAL TV host John Daly, Hypnotist Anthony Cools, Comedian George Wallace, the Chippendale Dancers, Author Joe Vassallo, Mayor Pro Tem Stavros S. Anthony, TV-13’s Casey Smith, FOX 5’s Ted Pretty, Heidi Hayes, Dave Hall and Maria Silva, and many others.  Vail’s family, husband Dave and children Sean and Ashley have also played a major supporting role in the event.
