The Facts and Fiction about IT Jobs

There are however still many myths that surround this rewarding career and here we tackle the fiction to set the record straight.

FICTION: You must have technical experience to work in an IT job.
FACT: A lot of people already working in IT jobs actually began their careers in a completely different field, from the arts, English and marketing to journalism and science. These degrees and qualifications can be applied to a wide range of IT jobs making a technical background obsolete.

FICTION: IT Jobs are boring
FACT: The area of IT Jobs covers so many careers that no longer are they considered boring. In fact IT professionals can be amongst the highest earners working on challenging jobs everyday adding their own creativity. IT workplaces are usually a very fun place to work, just look at Mark Zuckerbergs offices, with basketball courts, a skateboard park and keyboards dispensed through a machine.

FICTION: Only boys work in IT
FACT: Ok so most IT jobs at the minute are taken up by men, however there is a huge demand for women to join the IT sector.

FICTION: Only geeks work in IT
FACT: A quarter of a century ago this may have been true as many IT workers were uncelebrated behind the scenes people who worked hard on programming and codes. However now the whole world has embraced IT as a way of life, who doesn’t check their email daily or chat to friends through social networks? This makes it a very desirable career choice and one that is changing all the time.

FICTION: You need to have extraordinary maths skills to work in IT
FACT: With such a broad range of IT jobs on offer, employers are seeking people who add creativity, marketing and spark to IT jobs. Maths is not important for the majority of opportunities.

FICTION: An IT Job is a solitary affair
FACT: You may have an image of someone whose best friend is their monitor, eating sandwiches at their desk and barely looking up from the screen to interact with other people. This is a myth, as many IT jobs require team work, and people find they build up a great social life as the isolation imagined is far from the reality of working within an IT environment.
