May 1, 2012 - PRLog -- San Diego, CA – May 1, 2012 – Family-owned and operated, Jerome’s Furniture is proud to announce its support as local sponsor for the City of Hope, a leader in the fight to conquer cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and other life-threatening diseases.  The organization has recognized Jerome’s with a Lifetime Achievement due to its dedication to the City of Hope for decades.  Once again, Jerome’s goal is to build awareness and participation for Walk for Hope, which will raise funds for the City of Hope.

New this year, Jerome’s is hosting a Be the Match Registry Drive, where locals can join a registry of over 9.5 million committed marrow donors which exists to save lives. Every day, thousands of people with leukemia and other life threatening diseases search for a donor who can make their transplant possible, but the fact is, only three out of 10 patients receive the transplant that can save their life. City of Hope staff and volunteers will register Be the Match donor volunteers and Walk for Hope participants on Sat., May 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jerome’s San Diego Showroom (1190 West Morena Blvd., San Diego CA 92110).

To join Be the Match Registry at City of Hope, participants must be between the ages of 18 and 60 and be in general good health. Registration takes just a few minutes and includes basic medical and contact information, a swab of the inside of a registry candidates’ cheek and a signed consent form. The swab test is used to determine the registrants specific tissue typing. It is these specific markers on ones blood cells that are used to match to a patient in need. A volunteer donor stays in the Registry until the age of 61, unless he or she requests to be removed before then.

City of Hope has been a designated Be the Match donor center since 1991 and continues to work to increase the number of volunteer donors in the Be the Match Registry. City of Hope is unique in that it is not only a Be the Match donor center, but is also a collection center and transplant center as well.
At the drive, guests can also sign up for the upcoming Walk for Hope, an inspiring event planned for Sat., May 19 at Point Loma Nazarene University, selected for its stunning views and central location.  Walkers will participate in a 4K and will be joined by thousands of attendees who are part of a movement to help people whose lives have been touched by cancer to have hope and be able to live longer, healthier lives.

By joining together in this mission, Jerome’s is part of the effort to advance the cause, and get closer to the dream of one day living in a world without cancer – especially finding cures and breakthrough treatments for women’s cancers.  The company will be providing a significant amount of donated on-air radio advertising time to build awareness for the event, and all employees interested in walking will have their admission fee paid for by Jerome’s.  In addition, every one of the company’s showrooms across southern California will have entry forms, and their sales staff will be ready to provide more information to customers interested in participating.
To communicate the message of The Walk for Hope, Jerome’s will be setting up on-site kiosks where customers can share what “hope” means to them.  They expect hundreds of inspiring messages to be shared in-store and on the company’s facebook page at www.facebook.com/JeromesSanDiego.  The Navarra family, founders of Jerome’s, is especially proud to outfit the Survivor’s Pavilion with comfort seating.

“We’re proud to extend our support,” said Jerry Navarra, chairman of Jerome’s Furniture. “Last year, our employees and customers rallied together to help bring the City of Hope one step closer to achieving its vision to one day provide a cure for all cancers. We were inspired by messages of hope; and I believe this year, we’ll get even more support through our Be the Match drive and sponsorship.”

At the Walk for Hope, attendees will enjoy live music, entertainment, a children’s area, sponsor giveaways, vendor booths, and more. Jerome’s encourages all San Diegans and visitors to make a point to stop by the Survivor’s Pavilion, where the company will have a lounge set up with recliner chairs and a host of comfy seating for walkers.

“The City for Hope continues to make great strides in cancer research, and we are thankful to local companies like Jerome’s who have stepped up as sponsors for the Walk for Hope,” said Ellie Levine from Walk for Hope.   “We’re inspired by Jerome’s campaign, ‘What does hope mean to you?’ and look forward to an inspiring event this year.”
