Follow on Google News | Performance Poets Compete to become Philadelphia's Grand Slam ChampionThe best 7 poets of the season will compete in a two round slam to be crowned The Philadelphia Poetry Grand Slam Champion. A slam is competition judged by members of the audience. Mahogany Browne of the famous Nuyorican Poets Cafe will open the show.
Browne is a Cave Canem Fellow, the author of several books including Swag & Dear Twitter:Love Letters Hashed Out On-line, recommended by Small Press Distribution & listed as About.com Best Poetry Books of 2010. She has released five LPs including the live album Sheroshima. Browne has toured Germany, Amsterdam, England, Canada and recently Australia. Her journalism work has been published in magazines Uptown, KING, XXL, The Source, Canada's The Word and UK's MOBO. From 7:30 to 8:30pm, Browne facilitates a writing workshop that is free for attendees of The Pigeon Presents: The Philadelphia Poetry Slam. At 9, Browne performs original work, headlining the grand poetry slam, a competition between poets performing original work judged by members of the audience. “These are some of the best performance poets in Philly” Says co-founder and slam poetry champion Alyesha "Ms." Wise. “They will be bringing their best work in hopes of being crowned the first grand slam champion of the Pigeon Presents: The Philadelphia Poetry Slam” In addition to Browne's feature and the slam The Pigeon will spotlight local poet Seth Simons from UPENN's Excelano Project.
