New Melanoma Research Highlights Importance of Proper Skin Care

Melanoma research by Mayo researchers show increase in skin cancer among women.

April 30, 2012 - PRLog -- With the increase of melanoma rates, women will have to take better care for their skin. According to new Mayo research, the number of melanoma cases in women continues to grow and has increased to staggering rates. Melanoma can be fatal for many and is considered by the medical community to be one of the most dangerous forms of cancer.  Women should consider taking additional steps to properly care for the skin; protecting the skin against sun exposure should also be incorporated into a skincare regimen.

Skin cancer research conducted on women between the ages of 18-39 showed a sharp increase in melanoma cases.  Thirty years ago, the rate of melanoma in women was at 5.4 percent.  In 2009, the melanoma statistic climbed to 43.5 percent.  

Causes of Melanoma

Melanoma is caused by sun exposure.  It can also be caused by excessive tanning practices.  Women with a family history of skin cancer and certain skin types may be predisposed to the condition.  The skin cancer slowly develops over a period of time and isn’t easily detected by those unaware of the symptoms.  Melanoma skin cancer symptoms include abnormal spots on the skin and moles.

-Women under the age of 30 are more at risk for developing melanoma.  The melanoma skin cancer rate among women is up 50 percent from the 1980s.  
-The reported mean age for melanoma diagnosis is 50
-Out of every 50 Americans, one person is at risk of getting melanoma
-People with advanced stages of melanoma are likely to die within one year of diagnosis

Skin Protection Recommendations

-When planning to spend long periods of time in the sun, women should make sure to dress appropriately, wearing long-brimmed hats and covering up skin as much as possible.
-Monitor the use of tanning beds, making sure to avoid excessive tanning.
-Use a strong sunscreen to protect the skin again excessive UV exposure.
-Consider getting family history reviewed to assess personal risk for developing melanoma.
-Take note of any abnormal skin changes such as the development of moles or rashes.

For melanoma cancer prevention, women are encouraged to take extra precautions to protect their skin against sun damage.
