Von Miller Highlights Circle Ten Boy Scouts Awards
Von Miller, National Football League's 2011 Defensive Rookie of the Year will be the featured speaker at the Circle Ten Council Boy Scouts luncheon May 11, 2012 in Dallas. The Whitney M. Young jr. Service Awards will be announced at the event.
The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Awards also will be announced at the event. The awards are presented to individual volunteers or organizations that support Scouting programs in low-income and rural areas. Energy Future Holdings and PricewaterhouseCoopers are the title sponsors.
Von Miller was a Boy Scout while growing up in the Dallas area. “We are honored that Von Miller will be a part of this special event to honor supporters of inner-city and rural Scouting in the Dallas area,” said State Senator Royce West, luncheon chairman and Circle Ten Council board member.
“We want to provide all young men an opportunity to participate in Scouting, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds,”
Among those receiving the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award are:
Sherwood Blount, Jr. He is being honored for his tireless service extending Scouting activities. As a past council executive board president, as well as president/CEO of Parkway Realtors, he assigned employees to serve on various Scouting committees, provided funding for Scouting projects, and supplied resources for urban Scouting programs. Blount was a Scout himself and earned his Eagle Scout award in Circle Ten.
Dallas Municipal Judge Cheryl Williams. She is the Mustang District chairman of the Circle Ten council executive board. Judge Williams has provided consistent support and resources for Scouting in urban areas, including designing programs. She also ensured that every Scout in her area had the opportunity to attend camp, regardless of financial burdens and transportation.
Elva Moreno. She extended scouting in low income communities and Hispanic areas as the den leader and Ship Skipper of the Mountain Lake District. She has provided financial and volunteer support for various Scouting projects and programs. Moreno has also served in many district committee positions, including Camporee chair, Scout Sunday, Webelos Woods, Order of the Arrow Adult Advisor, and Scouting for Food chair.
Alpha Business Images. This firm is receiving the corporate business award. The company has helped to promote Scouting in hard-to-reach areas of the council by printing promotional and marketing materials. The company also helped finance local council programs and events in urban areas. It also recruited companies and volunteers to get involved in Scouting programs.
The Circle Ten Council Boy Scout awards are named after Dr. Whitney M. Young, Jr. a prominent lecturer and author who served as executive director of the Urban League from 1961 until his death in 1971. President Lyndon B. Johnson selected Dr. Young to receive the Medal of Freedom award in 1969.
