Mesquite, TX --- A Festival of Aviation featuring two days of Aerobatic Air Shows ‘takes to the skies’ in a new location this year at Mesquite Metro Airport with earlier dates for cooler temps over Memorial Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27. Just minutes from Dallas and easily accessible across the metroplex, Mesquite provides the perfect home for the Take to the Skies AirFest, previously known as the Summer Balloon Classic & AirFest. Debby Standefer, President of the Take to the Skies AirFest, stated “we have updated our name to reflect our showcase of all types of aviation and are exited to be working with Mesquite Metro Airport.” This will be the first Air Show of the season in the metroplex and the only Air Show in the Dallas area. Actually, this is not just an event; it is an experience that will affect all of your senses with something to offer every age.
Standefer says, “We are proud to honor our military over this important weekend.” While the festival will commemorate those who have served and are serving in our military services throughout the weekend, we have very special Opening Ceremonies at 1:30pm both Saturday and Sunday you won’t want to miss! Bagpipers, bands, honor guards, flybys, skydivers and more! 2012 is the Centennial of Marine Aviation and we are proud to have the Trojan Phlyers T28 team represent our Marines.
The City of Mesquite is celebrating its 125th birthday this year and what a party are we going to give them! Come join in the fun at the beautiful Mesquite Metro Airport in Mesquite and celebrate with us!
Saturday evening features the ever popular “Lite the Nite” balloon glow where the balloons will stand inflated and as the sun goes down you experience the breathtaking sight as the balloons start to glow like huge colorful orbs. The balloons will perform twinkle burns, waves, all burns directed by our event announcer. Weather permitting, this is the one time when spectators may be able to come up close to the balloons, talk to the pilots and see just how everything looks and works. A wonderful experience!
This year we will focus on our Air Shows adding even more excitement as we provide Two Days of Amazement for the whole family! The Air Shows begin at 2pm each day with a variety of airplanes performing dramatic flights and aerobatic performances, a thrilling sight for all! The stars of the show are the breathtaking Trojan Phlyers Demo Team with their astounding formation aerobatics that will keep you on the edge of your seat! Piloted by highly decorated combat veteran pilots performing exciting precision close formation aerobatic routines demonstrating the cutting edge performance of the Trojan T28 warbird and the flying expertise acquired in formal military training, the Trojan Phlyers demonstrate high speed action with the roar of the big engines as they fly their historic aircraft rich in military history in a unique and thrilling performance and salute the veterans or our great nation and the men and women who continue to serve and protect us today. Randy Ball will have you feeling the Afterburner with his Vietnam era MiG-17 jet performance where he will pull 8gs and reach speeds up to 700 mph while sometimes flying less than 100 feet off the ground!
Jan Collmer, co founder of the Frontiers of Flight Museum and author of the new book Go Start Something!, will fly his Extra 300L in maneuvers that will have you biting your knuckles! Mike “Spanky” Gallaway, announcer for the famous Red Bull Air Races and other prestigious events will have you jumping in excitement as he announces the show and flies as well! We are still adding performers!
We are proud to produce the only Aerobatic Air Racing Challenge in the south! Woman against Woman...Julia Wood faces Kate Kyer (both are airline captains!). Man against Man, and here's where the skill comes in…Husband against Wife...Julia against husband Tony Wood. And, they all perform solo aerobatics as well! The Trojan Phlyers will race their warbirds against each other in excess of 250 miles per hour! Teams of two will take to the skies in aerobatic maneuvers in a timed sequence. Cheer your favorites on to win right at the spectator line! After the Air Show be sure to meet all your air show pilots and get their autographs!
The event opens at 10:00am both days. Before and after the air shows you will be entertained with helicopters, airplanes, military aircraft, Commemorative Air Force, powered hang gliders and parachutes, skydivers, radio control aircraft and more, in static displays and demonstrations. Flights will be available throughout the day to the public in helicopters, airplanes, biplanes, a DC3 and tethered balloon rides, weather permitting, will be available on Saturday evening before the Glow. Wander through concessions of delicious foods, exhibits and booths. The Kids’ Area has a variety of attractions for different ages. This year’s Takes to the Skies AirFest promises to provide something for everyone in an action packed weekend of fun for the entire family! There is something for every age! The mission of the airfest is to encourage young adults to become involved in aviation, thereby contributing to better future adults. Bring the entire family and introduce them to the vast wonderful world of aviation and show them how they can become involved. You will love it!
“Sponsorship is invaluable to an event. It enables the event to grow in every way. The Take to the Skies AirFest relies on sponsorships so that we can keep this a very low cost event to the public and to continue to grow each year. We work with our sponsors to develop integrated programs not only to promote the sponsor and assist them in achieving their marketing goals, but to create a positive experience on site for the public. The attendance this event garners not only locally, but from spectators across the metroplex and throughout the state, gives us the ability to market not only our sponsors but to showcase and promote our growing airport and the wonderful city of Mesquite while at the same time becoming an important revenue source for the city through lodging, retail and food sales in town through the weekend. We are honored to have the support of Mesquite Metro Airport, the City of Mesquite and the CVB and proud to promote these incredible entities,” Debby Standefer said.
