Packed Lunches, Smarter Routes, Mobile App Helping Couriers on uShip Fight High Fuel Prices

As diesel prices hit all-time high, couriers and transporters on transport marketplace uShip are using methods old and new to cope and keep their businesses alive
April 23, 2012 - PRLog -- London, 23/04/2012 – When fuel prices skyrocket, most of us can adjust our lifestyle by taking less trips, using mass transit or working from home, but UK couriers for details and delivery companies don’t have that luxury.  They must be on the road to keep in business.  As the so-called Backbone of Britain, these haulers, transporters and couriers feel this spike in price harder than most of us.

Recently, online transport marketplace surveyed its couriers to better understand the impact of high fuel costs and measures they were taking to combat rising fuel costs:

Slimmer Margins
Clearly, rising cost of fuel means couriers and transporters must decrease their margins from an already-low level, further diluting profits. One transporter, Brett Row, said that the price of fuel was “stopping him from making a respectable living.” Another transporter, Noel Richardson, gave a far graver picture of the situation, saying that he was “seriously thinking about leaving the transportation industry altogether.”

Despite the grave picture, Row is taking some practical measures of coping.  He routinely takes a packed lunch with him in the van, to save on the costs of keeping himself fuelled on the road!

Row also said is more diligent about his route planning, using uShip to help find him jobs along the way, making his delivery loop as cost efficient as possible.

Mobile Reliance to Increase 90%
Another survey of UK courier and delivery drivers showed a growing dependence on mobile usage for business as well, especially with fuel costs at record highs.  In fact, over 94% of UK couriers on uShip anticipate using their mobile devices more or the same for business use vs. 2011.  With uShip launching its mobile app in the UK, drivers now have the ability to locate new business as they make their scheduled deliveries, turning empty miles into profitable miles.
