American Native is a weekly one hour radio program that focuses on the important matters of Native American life: health, family, culture, relationships, trends, current events, personal finance and more. In addition to highlighting information on issues and current events not commonly discussed each week in the mainstream media, the show also features interviews with a wide range of persons whose efforts influence Native American lives.

This week, Saturday, April 28th, 2012, the show features interviews with two previous guests - Native American Musical Artist of the Year, Classical Guitarist, Gabriel Ayala and Save the Peaks Legal Counsel, Lawyer, Howard M. Shanker.

Gabriel Ayala: A member of the Yaqui people of southern Arizona, he has been breaking stereotypes amongst Native and Non-Native people by performing classical, jazz, flamenco, and new compositions of his own; which are at the forefront of a new generation of Native Americans making a career performing music. Gabriel has received many accolades in his career among them is the honor of sharing the stage with Motown living legends The Four Tops, The Temptations, Richie Havens, Dr. John and many others as well as performing at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Howard M. Shanker: A lawyer, has represented environmental organizations, business interests, communities, Native American Tribes, and Native American organizations in complex constitutional, statutory, environmental, and natural resource based counseling and litigation for over 23 years. He previously served a three year term, as an appointee of President Clinton, on the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (“NEJAC”), Enforcement Subcommittee, where he worked to create policy to mitigate disparate negative impacts on low income and minority communities. Howard Shanker was honored by the President of the Navajo Nation and the Navajo Nation Council for his legal work in furtherance of protecting the San Francisco Peaks, a site that is sacred to the Tribe. In 2008, Howard Shanker ran for Congress in Arizona Congressional District One.

"As we put together the show we always envision it being listened to by a family just starting their day." Says Kevin Prout, Co-Producer. "With the exception of an interview on a serious subject,. American Native strives to be an entertaining, informative and inspiring hour . Even so, its important to us that our end product be a show the whole family can enjoy together." In a world of “Shock Jocks” and “Contentious Radio Talk Shows” that apparently is what makes “American Native” unique.
