Homer Hickam, whose writing career took off like a rocket with his runaway New York Times #1 best seller Rocket Boys (which became the hit film October Sky), is offering individual performers or garage and pro bands the chance to reach for the stars by recording a song based on his just released novel for young adults titled Crater.

Crater is about a 16-year old boy, Crater Trueblood, who lives in a rough frontier mining town on the Moon.  Crater is a Helium-3 miner who also has a band that plays at the local bar and grill.  In the novel, he sings a song titled "Moon Dust Girl" to a very special young woman.   Hickam includes the lyrics to “Moon Dust Girl” in the novel and readers have been wondering what the song would actually sound like.  To find out, Allen Media Strategies has created a contest for the best song by an individual performer, or garage/pro band using the lyrics.  Winners will be awarded signed copies of Crater, plus Hickam’s novel The Dinosaur Hunter, and his famous memoir Rocket Boys.  The winners will also receive massive Facebook, Twitter, and other national publicity!

Entries will be judged by an expert panel including America’s Got Talent winner and Columbia Records recording artist Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., music and radio industry insiders, and Hickam himself who encourages the bands and performers who enter to really stretch out creatively.

“The idea is for the artists to use the lyrics as a starting point," Hickam says.  "They can add any chorus they want and tweak the words any way it helps them musically.  But context is everything so reading the book and entering Crater's world is a good idea for entrants.  This isn't the first time Hickam has combined his writing talents with music.  He's completed several successful co-promotional music campaigns with platinum selling and Grammy Award winning artists Jim Brickman and Kathy Mattea.  He's also the co-writer of Rocket Boys The Musical, a Broadway bound musical based on his famous memoir.

The “Moon Dust Girl” lyrics from “Crater” are:

All I want is a Moon Dust girl,
Down in a crater waitin' for love.
All I want is a Moon Dust girl,
Kissin' me 'neath the world above.

All I need is a Moon Dust girl,
Makes workin' in the dust almost fun.
All I need is a Moon Dust girl,
Scrapes Heel-3 up by the megaton.

Now I have a Moon Dust girl,
Puts her helmet next to mine.
Now I have a Moon Dust girl,
She's one sixth gravity fine.

Deadline for entries is May 15, 2012.  Recordings should be placed on YouTube and contact information and Youtube links should be emailed to h3hickam@homerhickam.com.  Bands and performers sending entries agree that Hickam and Allen Media Strategies have the right to present their entry on Twitter, Facebook, or any other platform or media.  More information on Crater is available at www.homerhickam.com.
