April 16, 2012 - PRLog -- Known as an American heavy bomber during the World War II, the B-24 Liberator still holds the record as the most extensively produced American military and naval wartime aircraft of all time.

The Consolidated B-24 Liberator originated from a United States Army Air Corps (USAAC), an Aircraft Company in San Diego, California in 1938. The production of the said warplane is part of the “Project A”, a program that aims to expand American industrial capacity for production of air power. In 1939, the USAAC, under the Specification C-212, submitted a design study for a bomber with a longer range, higher speed, and greater ceiling than the B-17 Flying Fortress – the B-24 Liberator.

Although overshadowed by the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 Liberator had a number of virtues that made it a much more sought after aircraft than just being a heavy bomber. The B-24 Liberator is a fast flying warplane with 300mph at 30,000 feet and capable of carrying 8,000 LB of bombs and has an operational range of approximately 2290 miles. Moreover, it was also used as an antisubmarine plane, for reconnaissance and a to-haul cargo.

B-24 Liberator is heavily armed and possesses a long range which helped the Allies to take and maintain control of the vital seaplanes. Liberators dropped more than 635,000 tons of bombs on Europe, Africa, and the Pacific and took down a total number of 4,189 enemy aircraft. However, in combat, B-24 Liberator tended to burn easily than the B-17 Flying Fortress and when damaged, the B-24 was inclined to break up during a wheels-up landing.
