Aleksi then arrives as a Soviet gold medal contender in shooting at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, where he defects. Meanwhile, Ilmari begins a new career as a painter. Through his art, he expresses the longing for the Land of His Fathers, his beloved Karelia. As a renowned artist, he also finds inspiration from the seashores on Long Island. Aleksi becomes a literature professor with a specialty in Russian literature. The traumatic evacuation of Karelia makes him draw parallels to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

After a lifetime of missing the Land of His Fathers, at age 95, Ilmari is finally able to return for a visit, taking with him his grown-up children and grandchildren.
