April 12, 2012 - PRLog -- PORTLAND, Ore. – Leading Northwest building materials retailer Parr Lumber donated two sheets of plywood to the Maple classroom at Growing Seeds, a children’s learning community in North Portland. Under the guidance of their teacher, Jeffery Hotchkiss, the twenty students, who range in age from 3.5 to 5-years-old, transformed the boards into a mural of Portland. The morning of Thursday, April 12, 2012, the students gathered with their masterpiece at Parr Lumber’s flagship store on Martin Luther King Boulevard for a dedication ceremony.

“The mural started off with the children taking an interest in maps after a traumatic event where a few kids got stung by wasps while we were on a walk around the neighborhood one day,” said Hotchkiss. “Their interest in maps continued for months afterward.”

The mural features Portland landmarks of importance to the students, among them students’ homes, parks, Peacock Lane, downtown, the Rose Garden, all the bridges, Oaks Park and the zoo. The mural will be on display at the Parr Lumber MLK location as part of the Growing Seeds walking art show, Transforming our City, taking place Saturday, April 14, 2012. Other works of art will be displayed in locations throughout Portland including Woodlawn Park, Washington Park, OMSI and Café 11.

“The Growing Seeds mural is a such a fun way for Parr Lumber to be part of the community. Seeing the kids’ excitement makes this a simply great project,” said David Hamill, Chief Executive Officer of Parr Lumber.
