SYNOPSIS
16 To Life
Kate is a rural American teenager with a problem. It’s her 16th birthday, she’s
never been kissed, and she’s afraid somebody will point out what a loser she is
in the romance department. BFF Darby plans to lose her virginity today, so
Darby isn’t exactly a bulwark of support. Sound like “Sixteen Candles”? Well,
it isn’t. Think “Juno” – without the baby. Kate’s irreverent fantasies of sexual
awakening and guilt drive this explosive day. Kate pretends not to care about
Darby’s plan – and Kate focuses on playing matchmaker to her misfit fellow
employees at the Riverside food stand. Before the clock strikes midnight, Kate
finds out more about love than most 16-year-old girls could imagine!
This first feature from Emmy-nominated writer/director Becky Smith (Queer
Eye for the Straight Guy) puts a wry, witty, and unpredictable ensemble cast in
a small-town locale reminiscent of a Capra comedy. Starring Theresa Russell
(Louise), Hallee Hirsh (Kate), Mandy Musgrave (Darby) and Shiloh Fernandez
(Rene). 90 min. Carson Kressley of the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy even makes a cameo appearance.

A sampling of awards for this indie darling include:  Winner of Best Feature at the Method Fest Film Festival in Los Angeles, Asheville International Film Festival in North Carolina, Landlocked Film Festival in Iowa City, Ia, the Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto, Kansas City Film Festival and the Iowa Motion Picture Association; Winner of Best Actress for Hallee Hirsh at the Tunis International and Alaska International Film Festivals; and Best Supporting Actress at Los Angeles's Method Fest Film Festival.

A sampling of excerpts from reviews include:

"...intelligent characters and witty dialogue that Diablo Cody should take a note from."
Film Snobbery, Los Angeles

"A sweet-tempered, yet savvy little film. Be prepared for several delightful surprises along the way."
Mountain Express

"...Becky Smith's charming '16 to Life'... like 'Waitress,' focuses on the life of someone yearning for so much more. Like 'Juno' it features smart dialogue and a winsome performance from Hallee Hirsh. Smith doesn't overreach. She knows her story confined and focused. We care about the teenager's fate because Smith makes it key to her world."
Critic's Corner News Channel 4

"Becky Smith couldn't wait to hear the first laugh. She didn't have to wait long. That laugh came just minutes into her film, '16 to Life'.. the laughs kept coming for the next 90 minutes or so, followed by cheers, applause and screeches in the lobby as fans clamored to have their picture taken with the stars."
The Gazette, Iowa City

"Smith's freshman effort in feature filmmaking lived up to her earlier work in television. Smith puts her own stamp on the story of a teenage girld who is too smart for her small town. It's the film the Iowa Film Critics should send out as a great advertisement for why othe directors should think about making their films in Iowa."
