What’s in the MLB 2012 schedule for me?—that’s one of the questions fans are excited to find out. A quick overview of the 2012 schedule would probably help before proceeding further.

Released last September 14, 2011, the MLB 2012 schedule is loaded with must-see events fans should not miss.

The MLB 2012 season began at Tokyo Dome, Tokyo Japan last Wednesday, March 28, 2012, with a kickoff game between two American League West teams which are greatly popular in Japan, the Oakland Athletics and the Seattle Mariners. The matchup was the first of the two-game Japan Opening Series between the A’s and the Mariners from March 28-29.

Overall, the Opening Series ended up with a tie, with the Mariners winning game one and the A’s winning game two immediately the following day, Thursday, March 29. The kick-off game marked the 4th season opener held in Japan. Proceeds from the series were dedicated to assist Japan in their rebuilding efforts from the devastating tsunami which hit the nation last year.

A week after the Japan Opening Series 2012, a series of openers was held from Wednesday, April 4, to Friday, April 6. Last April 4, the season’s Opening Night was held with the christening of the Miami Marlins’ new ball park, the Marlins Park. The Marlins moved out of the Sun Life Stadium at the end of the previous season and they entered the 2012 season not only with a new name and new manager, but also with a new retractable-roof ballpark.

However, history wasn’t on their side when the Marlins suffered a 4-1 loss at the opening night game to the 2011 World Series Champion, the Saint Louis Cardinals. It would be recalled that five out of six ball park openings has been won by the host team. The latest was last when Minnesota won against Boston April 12, 2010 at Target Field, Washington.

The Opening Night was followed by six Thursday openers which are as follows: Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, Toronto at Cleveland, Boston at Detroit, Atlanta at the New York Mets, Washington at the Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles at San Diego.

Friday, April 6, had a total of ten games including nine more openers. The Friday openers are as follows: the New York Yankees at Tampa Bay, Minnesota at Baltimore, Seattle at Oakland, the Chicago White Sox at Texas, Kansas City at the Los Angeles Angels, Colorado at Houston, St. Louis at Milwaukee, San Francisco at Arizona, and Miami at Cincinnati.

On May 18, the 16th season for the interleague play will begin featuring games including White Sox at the Cubs, Oakland at San Francisco, Baltimore at Washington, Houston at Texas, the Angels at San Diego, and Cincinnati at the Yankees.

On April 15, The Jackie Robinson Day,  the Los Angeles Dodgers will be hosting San Diego Padres. The First-Year Player Draft will be on June 4 through June 6. Meanwhile, the 83rd edition of the MLB All-Stars Game will be on July 10 at the Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri. On August 19, the Civil Rights game will be held at Turner Field, Atlanta. This year’s regular season will end on Wednesday, October 3.

The MLB postseason was expanded from eight to ten teams with a new round of wild card team for each league. The World Series will begin on October 24 and will end no later than November 1.

The MLB 2012 schedule is indeed filled with momentous events!
