Leavenworth Winter Sports Club Hosts A 5k Obstacle Run at Ski Hill On May 5th

April 9, 2012 - PRLog -- Combine mud, trail running, obstacles and adventure and you have the perfect recipe for pure fun.  The “mud run” craze is the latest draw for 5k-10k races.  Whether you’re a fierce competitor or an off-the-couch thrill seeker these types of events are sweeping the nation with runners of all skill levels.  Leavenworth is the base camp for outdoor recreation in Washington State.  We have a little bit of everything, so it only seemed fitting to create our own obstacle run called the Bavarian Battle.

The 5k course of the Bavarian Battle will take place at the Leavenworth Ski Hill along pre-existing trails in cooperation with the US Forest Service.  Racers will find more than a dozen obstacles including a tire field, mud “swim” under electric wires, snow “skirmish” crawl, cargo net climbs, foam “frenzy”, slippery slides and much more.  The racers will be individually timed but are encouraged to register with friends and enter into the group costume contest.  Race registration includes a complimentary beverage, event t-shirt and Bavarian hat.  Registration by April 9th is $65.  Race intervals start at 9 a.m.  The finish line will offer live music, bratwursts and local brews until 7 p.m.  For the first annual production of the Bavarian Battle the organizers hope to register 500 racers.

Leavenworth Winter Sports Club has operated the Leavenworth Ski Hill under a special use permit with the United State Forest Service since 1928.  Much of the summer the venue is used for hiking, biking and theater performances for The Sound of Music.  LWSC wanted to use their beautiful venue to produce a fundraiser, one that would combine recreation and excitement.  Last year the Club’s fundraising efforts helped to install a new roof, electrical and plumbing for the Ski Hill Lodge amounting to nearly $50,000.  Creating this new outdoor event will help LWSC raise funds for their numerous annual improvements, the free after school ski program and free winter grooming of community trails.  For details about the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club’s kids programs, memberships, operations and events go to www.skileavenworth.com.
