Fusobacterium Infections Exposed in New Online Video

April 8, 2012 - PRLog -- Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of another online video to help educate the public about issues that may impact their health.  The latest educational video discusses Fusobacterium and infections caused by the bacteria.

Fusobacterium are widely known human and animal pathogens and have a worldwide distribution.  They are anaerobic, Gram negative bacteria similar to Bacteroides.  

Fusobacterium is the cause of Lemierre’s syndrome.  This disease often affects young healthy adults and can develop following a sore throat caused by bacterium of the Streptococcus genus when a peritonsillar abscess has been formed.  The bacteria may then result in an infected clot where it can then travel through the bloodstream.  Pieces of the clot may travel to the lungs blocking branches of the pulmonary artery.  Symptoms of Lemierre’s syndrome may include sore throat, fever and general weakness.  These conditions may be followed by swollen cervical lymph nodes and a tender and painful neck.  Difficulty breathing and chest pain may also be present
