Voice of Titanic survivor features on audio walking guide

To commemorate the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, a new audio walking guide is available. It takes listeners on a journey through the same streets in Southampton that many of the ill-fated ship's passengers and crew lived and worked in.

April 7, 2012 - PRLog -- The voice of Titanic survivor, the late Eva Hart, features on a new audio walking guide to Titanic memorials in Southampton, Hampshire.

The guide has been produced by Citysteps, which also has walking guides to London, Winchester Portsmouth, as well as some European cities. Titanic Trail, which allows visitors to walk around the city at their own pace, stopping at key points to listen to audio played on an MP3 player, has been made extra special by the inclusion of snippets of recordings of Titanic survivor Eva Hart.

The recordings were made over 40 years ago when Eva for the first time recalled her experience of life onboard Titanic, and her subsequent rescue, and are exclusive to Citysteps. Eva was just seven years old when Titanic set sail, and in the guide she tells listeners how she and her parents came to be on board Titanic, and about her firsthand experiences of Titanic's maiden voyage and the deadly night of 14th-15th April 1912. The recordings provided much of the content for the book about Eva’s experiences, Shadow of the Titanic: A survivor’s story.

Citysteps’ Managing Director, Graham Denney, commented, “Eva’s clarity of recollection is outstanding, and her ability to paint pictures in the minds of listeners has really brought this guide to life. Walking around Southampton following the guide, listeners can expect to see and hear things they’ve never come across before, and we’re privileged to be able to mark the centenary of this terrible tragedy in a way that helps honour those who lost their lives in the city.”

The Titanic Trail audio walking guide takes around 3 hours to complete, with around 1.5 hours walking time, and starts in Southampton’s Bargate taking in numerous memorials to Titanic’s crew, as well as key buildings linked to owners White Star Line, and of course Oxford Street and down into Dock Gate 4 from where Titanic set sail, before heading back into town and finishing close by Southampton’s newest attraction SeaCity Museum.
