U of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry Student Ben Youel Elected ASDA VP Nationally
University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry D-4 student Ben Youel was elected a Vice President of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), a national post he will hold through March 2013.
Youel is one of two ASDA Vice Presidents who, along with the President and ASDA Executive Director Nancy Honeycutt, comprise the ASDA Executive Committee.
On the third day, of the ASDA general session in Minneapolis in March, the first vote put Youel in the top three, and then the ASDA House of Delegates asked the trio five more questions before a second round of voting. The final result was for Colleen Green of Harvard for President, and Youel and Alex Barton, a female student from Virginia Commonwealth, for Vice Presidents.
The Executive Committee “runs the association day to day,” Youel explained. “We appoint delegates to represent ASDA to the American Dental Association [ADA] annual session, and the three of us split up other national meetings throughout the year. So we’re the three people most qualified to speak for American dental students.”
The issues that this year’s Executive Committee plans to tackle are dental student debt, member advocacy, and leadership development.
