April 5, 2012 - PRLog -- (Miami, FL)  April 3, 2012- The warning “once you get a tattoo it’s there forever” is not necessarily valid considering the advancements in technology.  Dr. Oscar Hevia of Hevia Cosmetic Dermatology in Coral Gables, Florida, sees an increasing number of clients seeking to remove their tattoos.  Once worn with pride, a beautiful “art piece” demonstrating one’s affection for a significant other, a relished memento of a brilliant achievement, a rite of passage or simply to note one’s independence, the tattoo(s) embellished on an arm, chest, back, or leg now appears as an atrocious reminder of a love gone wrong, a night of intoxication or a rebellious act against a parent.

A recent report noted Miami number 1- in the Top Most Tattooed Cities in America.

“As the acceptance of sporting some ink has increased- so too has the desire to get them removed,” reports Dr Hevia.  “Whether it’s to rid their body of the ink all together, or to make way for a fresh piece of art.”

The Miami area cosmetic dermatologist uses laser technology the Q-switched Yag laser to perform the procedures.  There are numerous types of tattoo removal treatments, however Dr. Hevia believes laser therapy to be the most effective and less invasive than say a saline based solution that requires scabbing to remove the ink, sanding the tattoo off with dermabrasion or surgically removing the tattoo and stitching the skin back together.

Dr. Hevia explains how the success of the removal is subjective to the size and color of the tattoo. “Monochromatic tattoos in black or dark blue react more favorably to the removal process, with multi-color, yellow, orange and green ink being more difficult.

Laser tattoo removal is a process that targets the tattoo pigment with short bursts of high-intensity laser light, while sparing the surrounding tissue from damage. It is also the preferred method for those wishing to replace the old tattoo space with a new image.

The average patient requires three to six treatments over a period of 1-2 years to remove the unwanted tattoo, and each treatment will continue to fade it over time.  Some tattoos will have significant fading but may not be completely removed.  He encourages consumers to have patience when it comes to any tattoo removal process.  “This is not a quick-fix. Over aggressive treatments will increase the likely hood of permanent white skin or worse damage,” notes Dr Hevia.

Dr. Hevia has removed tattoos from individuals of varying ages and lifestyles, from 20-somethings, to moms and singing icons.  He recalled a famous celebrity couple who sought his services to have a former wife’s name removed.

Dr. Hevia has also noted more job seekers, business executives and VIPs wanting to remove tattoos, seeking a more professional appearance.  While tattoos may become more mainstream, not every employer is open minded with regards to tattoos, many have a non-tattoo policy or require ink to be completely hidden during working hours.

One of the premier services offered by the industry thought-leader, Dr. Hevia highly recommends consumers to seek skilled, trained and licensed professionals for this type of medical procedure.
