Discover the incredible Great Wave of Kanagawa from Japanese artist, Hokusai.
By: Tom Gurney
This artist had a style which is very typical from his period but his career stood out because of the beauty of his paintings and the clever choice of elements with in them.
Japanese art was proved very popular in the west for several centuries and it is artists like Hokusai who helped to draw attention to it when Europeans had normally been interested only in what they themselves has produced.
Great wave of Kanagawa is perhaps the most popular of all to have come from Japan and you may see reproductions of it in western homes all over the place.
Some of the best qualities of this painting are it's clear contemporary lines as well as it's bold colouring which makes it ideal as a large scale print or poster for your home.
There is much more to see from the career of Hokusai besides just his Great wave of Kanagawa and this painting was actually just one art work from an extensive series of landscape paintings, another of which focused on the iconic Mount Fuji. In all there were around 20 to 30 artworks which remain highly respected contributions and the work proved so popular that the artist actually went onto produce several more similar paintings to add on to this series. The actual collection of which Great Wave was involved, is certainly what put Hokusai on the map in terms of his career in Japan and it was only later that western art fans started to discover the real qualities of his work.
Perhaps you are now another devotee to the magic of the Great wave painting and if so then why not take advantage of the many opportunities which lie out there from online reproduction companies. There is an increased level of competition which has really brought prices down.
