March 30, 2012 - PRLog -- Many consumers often wonder whether the various methods of hair removal are permanent.  There are many different methods of removing hair including depilatories, electrolysis, and now laser hair removal.  People are often under the impression that hair removal is permanent.  However despite the advances in laser technology, nothing including electrolysis leads to permanent hair removal.  While it is possible to effectively reduce the amount of hair, results can be variable and are often dependent on various factors such as underlying medical problems, hormonal imbalance, and even certain mediations.

Electrolysis and laser hair removal are two of the most effective methods of hair reduction.  While many people do enjoy significant hair reduction in terms of number and thickness of the hair, results can be variable.  There are certain benefits to each treatment.

Electrolysis employs an electric current delivered to the root of the hair follicle to effect its destruction,  Like laser hair removal, multiple treatments are often required for meaningful reduction.  While electrolysis is effective on all types of hair including light and fine hair, it is more painful and much slower than laser hair removal.  A small area such as the chin can take 5 to 10 minutes while a laser can perform the treatments in less than 30 seconds.  Performing electrolysis on larger areas such as the back or extremities can take hours to perform.

Laser hair removal is much quicker but it also has limitations.  First it is much more effective on thicker and darker hair.  Laser hair removal is no effective on fine hair or light colored hair such as white, blonde, gray, or even red.  Benefits include the speed and ease of laser hair removal.  Larger areas such as the back can be done in as little as 15 minutes.

Both electrolysis and laser hair removal require multiple treatments to be effective.  Most people require 6 to 8 treatments for effective permanent hair reduction.  Multiple treatments are required for significant hair reduction because hair grows in stages.  The three stages of hair growth include anagen, telogen, and catagen.  It is in the anagen or growth phase that a hair follicle is likely to be destroyed utilizing either electrolysis or laser hair removal.  At any given time, 15% to 20% of the hair are in the active growth phase.  Therefore after just 1 treatment, you can expect as much as 85% of the hair to come back.

It is not possible to obtain 100% permanent hair removal as hormonal factors as well as certain medical conditions and pregnancy state can lead to a recurrence of hair growth.  However, the recurring hair is often lighter and finer in nature.  Certain medical conditions such as thyroid dysfunction and polycystic ovarian syndrome require more treatments or recurrence can occur much quicker.

In conclusion, it is important to realize that for most people there is no such thing as permanent hair removal.  While some clients experience a significant reduction in hair growth, permanent hair removal is not possible with today;s technology.  However as lasers and other light based treatments become more effective, one day permanent laser hair removal may be a reality.
