Steve Rich & Associates Joins Paterson Habitat for Humanity to Protect Local Environment

March 28, 2012 - PRLog -- Paterson, NJ -- March 26, 2012 - Steve Rich & Associates, a local environmental contractor, recently removed two underground oil tanks at the site of a new home in Paterson, New Jersey on behalf of the Paterson affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. The project eliminated a significant risk of oil and groundwater contamination at the site. Speaking about the environmental hazard of older underground tanks, owner Steve Rich says, “tanks [before 1990] did not have a coating to protect them from rusting, and the bare metal is a ticking time bomb.

Once the tank begins to leak oil into the surrounding soil a repair isn’t feasible.” The contractor successfully extracted all remaining sludge and oil from the two tanks before removing the tanks themselves.

The excavation area has now been filled with certified clean soil and gravel. The project followed the stringent regulations of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, with oversight from town inspectors. Habitat for Humanity is an international non-profit that has built more than 500,000 affordable homes worldwide. The Paterson chapter, since its founding in 1984, has constructed more than 220 single-family and multi-family homes, helping over 230 families.

In recognition of Habitat’s important service to the local community, Steve Rich & Associates performed the oil tank removals at no charge. By volunteering the company’s expertise and resources, construction was able to move forward on five single-family attached housing units at the site. Steve Rich & Associates has provided oil tank removal and testing to over 20,000 clients in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania for over 30 years.
