FDNY Firefighter Chief Richard “Pitch” Picciotto to visit New Albany April 24th

Public and Student Lectures at the McCoy Center to provide a firefighter’s story of survival and escape from the World Trade Center

March 28, 2012 - PRLog -- [New Albany, OH] – FDNY Battalion Commander Richard Picciotto will be appearing in two separate forums on April 24th and provide a first-person account to his harrowing experience on September 11, 2001.  His appearance in New Albany is sponsored by Abercrombie & Fitch through the New Albany Community Foundation.

Chief Picciotto will interact with area students during the day as part of the Leslie H. Wexner Leadership Academy annual forum founded by Judy and Steve Tuckerman.  For the Wexner Leadership Academy, it’s expected that Mr. Wexner will participate in a discussion with Chief Picciotto about leadership.  In the evening, the chief will discuss his New York Times bestselling book, Last Man Down, as part of the McCoy Lecture Series.  Both events will be held at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts in New Albany (100 West Dublin-Granville Road).

The daytime event will be open to students and faculty from area schools.  Tickets for the 7 p.m. public event, presented by Abercrombie and Fitch, are $7 for adult general admission and free for students (students must reserve a ticket in advance).  Tickets are available via www.mccoycenter.org or by calling 614/245-4701.

“This represents a rare opportunity for area students and residents to hear a first-hand account of that unforgettable day and the difficult decisions those in leadership roles had to make,” said Cindy Hilsheimer, Chair of the New Albany Community Foundation board of trustees.  “This is a privilege and honor for our students and the broader community.”

Chief Picciotto is the highest-ranking firefighter to survive the World Trade Center collapse, and the last fireman to escape the devastation.  The chief was on a stairwell between the sixth and seventh floors of the North Tower when it collapsed on September 11.  A man who thought nothing of himself and gave everything for others during one of our nation's darkest hours, Chief Picciotto tells an outspoken account of 9/11, shaking and inspiring audiences.

Chief Picciotto is a former New York City police officer, and has served as a fire marshal, an arson investigator, a lieutenant, and a captain prior to becoming chief in 1992. He is a 28-year veteran of the FDNY, and for the past nine years, he has presided over the department's Battalion 11, covering Manhattan's Upper West Side. He is the recipient of departmental awards and commendations for his bravery and meritorious service.

Chief Picciotto’s visit is sponsored by New Albany-based Abercrombie & Fitch with support from the Wexner Leadership Academy Endowment Fund of the New Albany Community Foundation.
“We are pleased to sponsor Chief Picciotto’s appearances, especially for area students,” said Everett Gallagher, Senior Vice President and Treasurer at Abercrombie & Fitch.  “The 10-year anniversary of 9-11 is a good time to reflect on that day, how it changed our country and some of the inspiring stories of courage and leadership that came from something so tragic.”
