There are advantages to each, of course: a group trip is a great way to spend time together and enjoy new experiences, while sending the brood off to camp gives mom and dad a little cherished down time. If only frazzled parents could have both .... Now they can, thanks to Castlemartyr Resort in County Cork, Ireland. Sister property to The Dromoland Collection’s renowned Dromoland Castle, this luxury destination resort is launching an enhanced version of its popular Castlemartyr Kids Club just in time for Summer 2012. It’s new, it’s different, and it’s tailored to satisfy not just the younger set, but their parents, too. From July 18 to August 14, 2012, Castlemartyr Resort and its capacious estate will be transformed into a recreational retreat for V.I.K.s (“very important kids”). As for the grownups, the list of activities and amenities is as generous as the Irish themselves. For the kids, the fun begins on check-in, when they’re whisked to their own dedicated V.I.K. reservations area. Fortified with their snack, or perhaps a meal from one of the tot-tailored menus at the resort’s restaurants (The Clubhouse restaurant is great fun with its hip décor and huge window overlooking the golf course), the campers will be ready to jump in with both feet. And the fun-loving staff of Castlemartyr will be ready. First there’s the guided tour of the Manor House, awesome swimming pool, Kids Zone (more on that), and guestroom, complete with all the tech toys any savvy wunderkind could desire. Next it’s time to study the Kids Club schedule and plan the activities to be explored during the junior set’s stay. Daily activities run in the morning and the afternoon and are hosted by resident Irish Setters Earl and Countess, who will oversee the proceedings (with a bit of help from their human assistants). Programs are organized according to age: under eight (ages 4-8) belong to the Little Paws Club, while older children (ages 9-12) are members of the Top Dogs Club. Activities include: • a mini-Olympics • nature walks • off-site excursions (Fota Wildlife Park and Leahy’s Open Farm) • arts and crafts • horse and carriage rides • storytelling • dog walking and cycling • face painting and games, and • Kids’ High Tea every afternoon (no worries – the Chef knows his audience!), followed by a movie night. (Teens will, of course, skip directly to all the other cool stuff, like golf, archery, angling, and clay shooting, for a supplementary charge.) Now for the really good part…while the kids are “away”, the parents can play! The options are boundless. Golf, perhaps? Castlemartyr Links Golf Club, a Private Member’s Club, boasts an 18-hole inland links-style Irish Championship par 72 golf course designed by Ron Kirby.
