History of Grand Encampment Told in New Book

Local authors release new book featuring stunning collection of vintage photographs

March 28, 2012 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series is Grand Encampment from local authors Candy Moulton and Terry A. Del Bene. The book boasts a vast collection of vintage photographs and memories of days gone by.

For centuries, people have come to the Grand Encampment valley to fish, hunt and enjoy the cool mountain weather. Fur trappers and traders gave the region its name, calling it Camp le Grande. During the 1897 copper mining boom, Camp le Grande became Grand Encampment when a town-site company gave birth to the Grand Encampment Copper District.

Mining brought a flood of people to the area and spawned the town of Grand Encampment. The mining boom was an economic bonanza for the region during a 10-year period from 1897 to 1908. The miners were not alone as ranchers had already patented homesteads and were raising cattle and crops prior to the discovery of copper.

In this volume, the hardy folks who lived and worked in the Grand Encampment area—from its earliest development to the present—are captured in photographs from all eras and in places throughout the Grand Encampment valley. These images come from private and public collections.
