Vibrant and innovative food scene spawns creation of Asia’s first Spanish food and beverage trade

Delicioso Spain to leverage on Singapore’s reputation as culinary capital of the region
By: MP-Fira International Pte Ltd

March 28, 2012 - PRLog -- Barcelona & Singapore, 27 March 2012 – Spanish cuisine has been on the rise for the last decade, thanks to culinary superstars such as Catalan chef Ferran Adrià. Now, it is making waves in Asia, spawning the opening of many Spanish tapas joints and inspiring fusion cuisine.

Leveraging on the growing appetite for authentic Spanish fare in the Far East, a tradeshow on food products, ingredients and wine will make its debut in one of Asia’s most vibrant lifestyle hubs – Singapore. The inaugural edition of Delicioso Spain will be held at Suntec Singapore from 1 to 3 November 2012.

Delicioso Spain 2012 is organised by MP-Fira International, a joint venture company set up by two established exhibition organisers – Fira de Barcelona of Spain, and MP International of Singapore.

Mr Josep Lluís Bonet, President of Fira de Barcelona, said, “As the only dedicated exhibition in Asia that focuses on Spanish food and beverages, Delicioso Spain is an excellent marketing platform for Spanish producers eyeing the Asian market.

“The staging of the exhibition is in recognition of the fast growing interest in Spanish food and beverage products and services. This can be seen from the increase in food exports destined for the Asian market.”

According to The Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX), Spain’s food exports reached 31 billion euros in 2011, of which 2.1 billion euros was contributed by Asia.

Culinary capital of Asia

Mr Bonet commented, “When we were approached by our partner MP International to organise this food trade show, we immediately took up the offer as Singapore is the ideal springboard, having earned the reputation as the culinary capital of Asia.“

Singapore’s reputation is affirmed by a research conducted by Richard Florida, an author and urban studies theorist. In his article ‘Geography of Great Restaurants’, he took a close look at the number of best restaurants per capita using data from San Pellegrino’s annual ranking of the world’s 100 top restaurants.

In his study, Singapore scored top honours with six world-class restaurants per 10 million people in 2011, ahead of Hong Kong and Spain with scores of 4.28 and 1.74 respectively.

Ms Sylvia Phua, Chief Executive Officer of MP International, explained, “Asia’s rising affluence has created demand for exciting new food styles. This is coupled by the fact that there has been a huge shift in the gastronomic world over the last decade.

“Currently, Spain is providing some of the inspiration to the culinary world on innovative fusion cuisine. Therefore, it is not surprising that Spanish-style eating and drinking has emerged in the East in a big way.”

She added, “The launch of Delicioso Spain will enable our exhibitors to embrace the vast opportunities in this region by helping them to make that crucial connection to the region’s major buyers.”

Warm industry response

The inaugural showcase has attracted enthusiastic response from the food and beverage industry.

Mr Umberto Vizcaino, Director of Solymer Asia which imports Spanish food and owns Bilbao Restaurant & Gastrobar, commented, “Spanish cuisine focuses on high quality ingredients and sophisticated flavours.

“Direct access to authentic and top quality ingredients will allow gastronomic restaurants like ours to take the cuisine to a higher level. We are definitely looking forward to this event.”

To date, the show has received the support of the Embassy of Spain in Singapore, the Food and Beverage Managers' Association of Singapore, Club Managers Association (Singapore), International Bartenders Association and China-Hong Kong Bartenders Association.

More than 100 exhibitors are expected to promote their products and services at Delicioso Spain 2012. Catering to the sourcing needs of food importers and distributors, gastronomic restaurants, food retailers, supermarkets and gourmet stores, it will enable visitors to source for cheese, olives, ham and sauces, as well as beverages, wine, processed food and other food products and services.

A series of highlights is being planned that will sharpen the business networking, educational, and cultural experiences of participants. These include business matching, forums, talks, demonstrations and visits to lifestyle spots in Singapore.

Food and wine exhibition cluster

Delicioso Spain 2012 will be part of a food and wine cluster of exhibitions that are concurrently making their debut. It will be co-located with Asia Wine Expo and Oishii Japan, a dedicated Japanese food and drinks showcase.

Ms Phua explained, “Our concept of clustering all three shows in one venue leverages on the combined synergies of these complementary, lifestyle-centric events. It strengthens the value proposition to our target buyers from the hospitality industry.

“This will allow trade buyers to source a comprehensive range of products and services. At the same, it has the advantage of meeting the niche demands of buyers of Spanish, Japanese and wine segments.”
