Gran Fondo New York Presents the Official Race Jersey by Giordana on Sky Television
Gran Fondo New York presented the event’s official race jersey produced by Giordana on Sky TV in Milan, Italy during a 10-minute segment on February 17, 2012. The jersey is mandatory attire for participants during the May 20, 2012 cycling event.
“Compared to last year, the mandatory race jersey is a bit brighter and a bit bolder,” said Lidia Fluhme, organizer of Gran Fondo New York. “The same changes can also be said of the race, which in the second edition has grown to nearly triple the size from last year: triple the participants, triple the size of the pre-race NYC Bike Expo and more sponsors who provide the competition and raffle prizes to Gran Fondo New York participants.”
Born out of the passion of two former finance industry professionals, Gran Fondo New York offers a unique proposition for a cyclist: competing over 100 challenging, hilly miles from New York City to Bear Mountain and back with thousands of other cyclists from around the world. Gran Fondo New York CEO, Uli Fluhme explained, “Lidia and I love to ride our bikes, we love to compete and we love New York City. But no existing event offered the unique mass-participation experience over a long distance that was a worthy personal and physical challenge that also allowed participants to measure their performance against others. So we created it and filled a hole in the NYC sports scene.”
The inaugural edition of Gran Fondo New York was received with excitement locally and worldwide. Local TV stations, newspapers and magazines reported about it and virtually all cycling press around the world covered the event with race reports and photos. Gran Fondo New York aired on Italian national TV in a 10-minute segment during the live coverage of the 2nd stage of the 2011 Giro d’Italia.
Sky Television is passionate and deeply vested in cycling. The passion goes beyond being fans of and reporting about the sport; the network sponsors a professional cycling team, Team Sky. The team boasts members like Mark Cavendish, the reigning Road Cycling World Champion, and Grand Tours specialist Bradley Wiggins. Some members of Team Sky will come to New York City to participate in Gran Fondo New York. They will take part “for fun” since professional cyclists are not permitted to complete in amateur cycling events. Plans are also under way to produce a 2-hour broadcast of Gran Fondo New York to air on Sky immediately following the event.

May 20, 2012 marks the second edition of Gran Fondo New York. 6000 cyclists from over 70 countries and 47 US states will take on a challenging 105-mile course from NYC to Bear Mountain and back to compete against each other, the clock and themselves in a personal and physical test of endurance. Gran Fondo racing stems from Italy, where these amateur cycling races take place nearly every weekend throughout Italy giving the cyclists a chance to test and prove themselves on two wheels.
