By: Vivalogue The book, Because You’re My Mother, will combine contributions about mothers from across Canada with relevant stories about mothers in developing countries. “Like with other kinds of gift-giving, many of us struggle each year to come up with the perfect gift for our moms,” said Paula Roberts, Executive Vice-President of Marketing and Development at Plan Canada. “Now people will be able to honour their mothers and help less fortunate moms across the world at the same time.” “We are proud to be part of this initiative,” Having a baby can be a stressful but still joyful event for many Canadian women, especially when they know they will have nearby access to a medical facility and health care professionals to ensure their baby is delivered safely. That’s not the case for the 1,000 women in the developing world who die daily due to preventable causes and complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. More than half of all Tanzanian women deliver their babies at home, without the help of trained birth attendants. Plan Canada is committed to providing the facilities, equipment, training and education necessary to improve the lives of more than 1.2 million people who will be affected by this project, and to ensuring that mothers and their newborns get a better chance for a safe birth and a long, healthy life. About Plan and the ‘Because I am a Girl’ Initiative Founded in 1937, Plan is one of the world’s oldest and largest international development agencies, working in partnership with millions of people around the world to end global poverty. Not for profit, independent and inclusive of all faiths and cultures, Plan has only one agenda: to improve the lives of children. Because I am a Girl is Plan’s global initiative to end gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls – and everyone around them – out of poverty.
