New Treatment Provides Breakthrough Relief To Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea currently is associated with a number of diseases, including; high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, heart attack, pulmonary hypertension, type II diabetes, depression, memory loss and numerous other health problems. Past research has shown that patients suffering from untreated obstructive sleep apnea are two to three times more likely to be involved in traffic accidents than the general population and are at high risk for injury in the workplace. In children and teens obstructive sleep apnea is linked to lower academic grades and problematic behavior, as it is associated with inattention, fatigue and possibly poor study skills.

Obstructive sleep apnea is enormously under-diagnosed and under-treated condition, frequently missed and misdiagnosed by well-meaning physicians. Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with soft tissue collapse in the throat, however, many sufferers also have long narrow faces, small lower jaws and/or chins, small and narrow dental arches, large overbites, crooked teeth, large tongues, flat facial features, high and narrow palate and large noses. The soft tissue collapse is often due to mid-facial deficiency (flatten-profile), where bony structure is inadequately spaced to provide ample room for the soft tissue laxity that occurs in sleep.  

The DNA appliance is an option for those who cannot comply with CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), and/or refuse surgery as too radical and risky. The DNA appliance unlike other dental devices is designed to engage and/or initiate growth in the jaws. Why is this important? Because by changing the size of the jaws the size of the airway space is directly increased.
