March 20, 2012 - PRLog -- A computer manufacturing company, Arm Holdings, has unveiled what it describes as the "world's most energy-efficient microprocessor" design. The Cambridge-based firm says that its new microcontrollers based on the "Flycatcher" architecture, and will pave the way for the "internet of things" - the spread of the World Wide Web to a wider range of devices.

The managing director at DCM Marketing is excited by the news. “This new hardware will allow internet connectivity to be extended to fridges and other white goods, for example. This will mean that supermarkets will be able to receive information direct from your kitchen and when you run out of milk or your favourite brand of bacon, your fridge can order it for you and the supermarket will deliver it without you having to reach for a trolley.”

The technology can also be installed in medical equipment, energy meters, and home and office lighting. The practicalities are almost limitless.

Arm Holdings say it went back to the drawing board to create the new processor cores. They measure 1mm by 1mm in size and should draw around a third less energy than their predecessors, which only offered 8 and 16-bit capabilities. A spokesman at Arm adds that its design has been created to consume almost no power when it is in sleep mode. The firm says that means devices can offer wireless connectivity when paired with modern Bluetooth or radio equipment, offering years of life from a single battery-pack.
A source within DCM Marketing was full of praise for the work of Arm Holdings. “They are breaking incredible new ground in the field of micro-computing. This new chip will enhance life for so many people, from the young and technologically-aware to those of the older generations.

“This chip will also mean that people who are housebound or otherwise disabled will no longer have to worry about how to get more food or fuel. Their appliances can monitor consumption of these things for them, and replace them as needed. This will improve the lives of many people.”
