5 Top Tips for Charity Fundraising

March 20, 2012 - PRLog -- Many of us desperately want to raise funds for charity but the big question is just where, when and how do we start?  Sometimes it seems like a mammoth and insurmountable task and the old joke springs to mind of “how do you eat an elephant?” The answer “Just one slice at a time”.  Well according to Beth Deakin, a motivated 26 year old from Staffordshire, that’s exactly how she started her fundraising efforts following the sudden death of her much loved grandfather, Frank, who died suddenly at the age of 81 this year.

1.   Choose a charity: “To honour the memory of my grandfather, I wanted to raise funds for St. Giles Hospice.  So, first of all, you really need to decide which charity you wish to raise funds for.  There are just so many worthy causes out there that genuinely need more money for them to carry out their work.  For me it was a no-brainer, my grandfather, Frank, had supported St Giles Hospice while he was alive.  St Giles provides high-quality medical and nursing care for people living with cancer and other serious illnesses.  I just wanted to follow in his footsteps and support them too”   comments Beth

2.   Choose a challenge: “Next, choose the challenge you are going undertake to get sponsorship money.  For me, I decided to set my sights high and climb Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro.   I have never done anything like this before in my life.  So trekking for 7 days at high altitude, culminating in standing on the roof of Africa at a massive 5895 metres is going to be a real challenge for me.  So that was how my Kilimanjaro climb for charity was born!  Make sure you pick a good operator to help you achieve your goal.  I chose Private Kilimanjaro as they are ABTA bonded and also have a great track record for safety and getting people to the top

3.   Tell everyone about it: Once you’ve decided on which charity and what challenge you are going to undertake, the best thing then is tell everyone you know about it, that way you are committed, not backing out..... you are then firmly on the road to achieving your goal” adds Beth. “I actually contacted my local paper and also set up a Facebook page to blog about my Kilimanjaro charity climb, where my friends and family could follow my progress.  I even posted fitness training progress updates to keep myself really focussed.”

4.   Raising funds: “The next thing is to get fundraising, firstly you need to decide how you are going to raise money and collect it in.  There are several internet sites set up for receiving donations but on many of these such as justgiving.com you have to pay commission on all the money that you raise.  To avoid this you can set up an email address for your charity climb such as Beth_Kilimanjaro@hotmail.co.uk .  You then need to set up a paypal account with this email address and get your friends and family to send donations to this account as gifts.  Paypal charge you nothing for this so all the money you raise goes to your chosen charity.”

5.   Get fit: “Another tip, give yourself a head start by allowing yourself plenty of time to get fit and in shape to give yourself the best chance of completing your challenge.    I started by running for 5 minutes on the treadmill, just a couple of months later, I am now up to a full hour.  I am delighted at how much having this challenge and the knowledge that my family and friends are supporting me has focussed my efforts.  I’ve already achieved so much more than I had initially thought and I haven’t even set foot on Mount Kilimanjaro yet.  I’ve intensified my training now as I’m only just over 2 months to go before starting my Kilimanjaro climb.  So now all I have to do is complete my charity challenge!” says Beth.
