March 19, 2012 - PRLog -- The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on February 29, 2012 that receiver Hines Ward was released to become a free agent.

A third round-draft pick in 1998, Ward is the team’s career leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.  His career highlight came in Super Bowl XL, when he was named most valuable player with five catches for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Ward made headlines, along with teammate Troy Polamalu, in Super Bowl XLIII, when both players had platelet-rich plasma injections in the weeks leading up to the game in order to heal stubborn injuries.

Dennis Lox, M.D., a sports, physical and regenerative medicine specialist in the Tampa Bay area, notes, “Athletes have been turning to platelet-rich plasma and stem cell technology for some time and though there are not large clinical trials, many elite athletes have expressed improvement.  As technology advances, athletes will be more likely to reach out and embrace any technological advance that may help improve their career.”
