Third Annual Jewelry Sale Funds Education for Indian Street Children

March 19, 2012 - PRLog -- Last spring, La Jolla restaurateur Reyhan Gumustekin helped raise enough money to send three Indian street children to the Alpha Montessori School in East Delhi, India [www.igniteafl.org]. On April 27 and 28, she hopes to raise enough money to continue that support, as well as fund additional scholarships and provide much needed supplies for the school.

Gumustekin and educators at the Maria Montessori School in Clairemont are now collecting unwanted jewelry of all types for this year’s sale. Donations are being accepted during operating hours at:

• Maria Montessori School, 4544 Pocahontas Street in San Diego

• Bernini’s Bistro, located at 7550 Fay Avenue in the village of La Jolla

All proceeds from the sale of donated jewelry will benefit the Alpha Montessori School project. The public sale will be held on Friday, April 27 from noon to 2:30 at Maria Montessori School, and on Saturday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bernini’s Bistro.

“Last year our donations ran the gamut from sophisticated estate pieces to children’s bangles and earrings,” said Gumustekin. “Because we’re happy to accept any kind of donation, our sale is able to offer something for both adults and children.”

Gumustekin said the sponsored children reside in the Mandawali slum, and include:

• Six-year-old Radha, one of five children, whose father works as a rickshaw driver, and mother as a maid. Radha and her family live on $80 per month and live in a one-room rental.

• Five-year-old Antima, whose family lives on $60 per month. Antima’s father works as a security guard and her mother is illiterate.

After years of providing informal support and training, educators at the Clairemont Montessori established an official sister city relationship with Alpha Montessori School in 2005.
