March 16, 2012 - PRLog -- Grand Junction, Colorado – College student volunteers at IntelliTec College in Grand Junction supported the American Heart Association with a “Penny Wars” fundraiser for Valentine’s Day. The Student Ambassadors Club raised over $600 for the charity by putting together this friendly student and faculty competition between each of the college’s career training programs.

The entire campus had a great time competing and raising money for this charity. The “Administrative Professional” business career training program (http://www.intelliteccollege.com/grand-junction-colorado-college/administrative-professional.php) won the event. The winning students were awarded with an extra break from class to enjoy a two-tiered custom cake provided by Gypsy Overstreet, the Student Ambassadors Club Treasurer.

The “Penny War” was a competition between the campus programs designed to raise money for the American Heart Association. Each program was given a donation can that was placed in the student break area on campus. One penny was equal to one point. Silver coins and paper bills were added to cans by competing programs in order to cancel out their opponents’ penny points.

This was the first “Penny Wars” event that the college in Grand Junction  (http://www.intelliteccollege.com/grand-junction-colorado-...) has been a part of. Dean of Students Shelby Maloney was very excited about the student and faculty participation for this event. She said it was “a competitive comedy, with everyone sneaking in to fill their opponents’ buckets with silver and dollars to cancel out points (and) rumors of mass penny blasts in the final stretch of the event.”

This fundraiser for the American Heart Association will likely become an annual event at IntelliTec. Next students are planning an event to support autism research and awareness. In the past, this student group has held several events to help those in need, including a food drive and homeless shelter volunteer day to benefit the local homeless in their community.

The Student Ambassadors was established by Admissions Representative Carole Earnshaw and Dean of Students Shelby Maloney. Maloney says the student group “consists of approximately 16 community-minded students whose GPA is at least a 3.5 and who maintain 90% attendance. They serve as campus leaders, mentors and tutors. Each term they select various community outreach events and non-profit organizations to support.”

The Student Ambassadors join several other campus groups that have also been involved in charitable events such as a Bone Marrow Donor Drive, the March of Dimes’ “March for Babies” event, the Susan Komen “Walk for the Cure, breast cancer awareness event” and a “Stuff a Stocking” event to provide toys for children of students and various health fairs.
