March 12, 2012 - PRLog -- Creative Nonfiction, the country’s oldest magazine devoted exclusively to nonfiction, has brought together the worlds of writing and medicine with a new online course in Writing Medical Narratives -Starts MARCH 26, 2012.
“Medical professionals across the country are recognizing the importance of using stories to influence public opinion and medical policy,” said Anjali Sachdeva, director of online courses at Creative Nonfiction.  “While reports and statistics convey important research information, they don’t capture the average reader’s interest.  We want to help doctors, nurses, aides, and others in medicine discover how persuasive narratives about their true life experiences can be.”
The twelve-week course includes guest lectures from such important voices in the medical narrative field as Dr. Manoj Jain, an infectious disease specialist and contributor to the Washington Post, and Theresa Brown, RN, author of Critical Care and regular contributor to the New York Times’ Well blog.
The online format allows participants from all over the United States and across the globe to participate, and uses a flexible schedule to accommodate the busy lives of medical professionals.  Course topics include Using Detail Effectively, The Writing and Revision Process, and a lecture on Ethical and Legal Concerns that guides participants through the necessary steps to avoid HIPAA violations in their writing.
Class members communicate through a combination of online discussion boards, phone conferences, email, and written peer critiques.  They also receive professional feedback on their writing from Leslie Rubinkowski, a professional writer with over twenty years of journalism experience and professor in Goucher College’s MFA program.
“One of the thing students enjoy most about this program is the chance to interact with other medical professionals who share their interest in writing, and to have guidance from professional writers already working in this field,” said Sachdeva.

Classes begin March 26th.  More information available at http://www.creativenonfiction.org/cnfshop/product_info.ph... or by contacting sachdeva@creativenonfiction.org
