Mother wonders if she punishes her children too much.

Los Angeles, Calif. (March 7, 2012) – A mother of two, Angela M. Hutchinson, was playing with her 3-year-old son in the living room and noticed her 17-month baby standing on the couch reaching for the switch on a tall floor lamp.  Hutchinson sternly shouted, “No-no!”  The baby withdrew from her mischief, and then said to her mother,  “I go time out.”  Her mother and big brother giggled at the baby as she confidently pranced into the children’s bedroom to the area where her brother has to sit for his ‘time outs’.

“It’s always wonderful to be present to hear your child’s first baby sentence, but I did question whether I punish my son too much in front of my daughter since she was compelled to articulate her own punishment so quickly.”

Disciplining young children is often a topic of debate among new parents. But for parents like the Hutchinsons who have multiple children, they generally see the benefits of disciplinary actions.  A parents role is to keep their baby safe, secure and stimulated, according to Sandy Bailey, a Certified Family Life Educator.

While parenting has its challenges, there are certainly many joys and exciting first moments.  Hutchinson recalls the first acting role her daughter landed in the film, “The Trace,” starring Billy Dee Williams and other star actors.  “My daughter plays the role of baby Stacey, and just had to stay asleep during the scene with her on screen mom so that wasn’t much of a challenge during her nap time,” says Hutchinson.

The first smile, the first word and the first crawl are just a few of the joys that every parent looks forward to experiencing.  Hutchinson however didn’t exactly get to witness her son’s first crawl because he went straight to walking.  According to the Berkley Parent Network, crawling is no longer considered a developmental milestone.

“My son never actually crawled so when he took his first walking steps at 11 months, I had sort of an epiphany thought that I wrote down to share with him when he’s older on the topic of learning new things and  pursuing your dreams:  ‘Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you have to crawl before you can walk—because you never did.  Sometimes in life miraculous things or unexplainable situations happen, so you must always be prepared for the next step in the life that only you are destined to live.’” says Angela M. Hutchinson, Parent of Two.
