March 8, 2012 - PRLog -- Social media is a huge, free resource for small businesses and independent contractors looking to promote their brand, increase customer loyalty, and get the word out about their products and services. With a consistent, systematic approach, anyone can generate tons of traffic and sales (granted that you have a decent offering). While the process of building and maintaining a successful social media presence can be very involved and time consuming, here are a few tips regarding the most common social media activity, the public post.

Social Media Marketing Tip 1:

Avoid Blatant Self-Serving Advertising

No one likes blatant advertisements posted on their wall, page, or group. Yes, you might be having a kick ass sale that the person or group might appreciate, even so, would you like a random person to slap an advertisement sticker on your car's bumper? If you're going to post on someone's wall or group, at least share something interesting that isn't completely self-serving, like an article, video, or even a coupon (the coupon might be pushing it). If you want someone to promote your product on their wall, page, or group, ASK THEM TO! Better yet, offer to cross promote their product.

Fitness Social Media Marketing Tip 2:

Facebook College: Guide to Quotations

Don't be afraid to quote other people. Generating constant, interesting content is nearly impossible on your own, and why re-invent the wheel? If you see something interesting that your potential customers might like, post it! Also, regardless of what some nit-pickers will say, you're not writing your senior thesis when you post on your wall; if you don't feel like listing Ghandi and putting the post in quotation marks, who cares? The only exception is if you are quoting a colleague who would appreciate the quote, or a competitor who might get pissed off about it (especially if you operate in a small niche industry).

Fitness Social Media Marketing Tip 3:

Take a Stand! (But don't be a d-bag about it)

Don't be afraid to take a stand, but you don't have to be a dick about it. If you have a relevant, controversial matter to say something about regarding your industry/market, do it, but be careful! State your feelings, say why you feel them, and resist the urge to insult the "other" side. You may inadvertently alienate a lot of people and businesses who may feel just as strongly the other way. On the flip side, the more strongly you feel and state something, the more loyalty and camaraderie you'll generate with other like-minded people. Use common sense when you post.

Fitness Social Media Marketing Tip 4:

Sell to Your Customers, Not Just Your Buddies

Your statements should appeal to your customers most of the time, not your colleagues. Yes, it is really neat when your fellow industry professionals agree with what you post, but how does it speak to the customer? Chances are, your customer is nowhere near as knowledgeable as you are regarding your industry and will misread or totally disagree with your statement because they don't understand it! Take a step back before you post something and read it from the customer perspective. Better yet, ask them about it before you post.

Fitness Social Media Marketing Tip 5:

Not Good Speling and Gramer is Bad

Spelling and grammar MATTER. We've all seen people misspell, misuse, and generally abuse the English language in their posts. You take away the power and focus of your message when you make dumb grammatical or spelling mistakes. Take a couple minutes and review your posts before you post them, your readers will appreciate it.
