February 28th, 2012 LA, CA - On March 15th 2012, LAB ART, the Nation's largest art gallery dedicated to Street Art, presents the 1st solo art exhibit of street artist turned social activist, Lydia Emily. Her art show, titled 'The Bamboo Curtain,' is a visual journey of the cultural struggles of the Tibetan people living under China's rule via the mediums of oil, canvas and newsprint from the New York Times.
"Art is the only Weapon of the People" Lydia Emily, Artist & Activist

In 'The Bamboo Curtain' exhibit,  Lydia Emily attempts to shed light on the daily suffering of the Tibetan people under the oppressive rule of the Chinese Government. Lydia Emily takes the audience on a dynamic journey through iconic images of Buddhist Monks in saffron robes chanting and in prayer, as well as adding a sense of the familiar by portraying young monks skate boarding. To capture the sense of pain that is a fact of life for many Tibetans under Chinese rule, Lydia paints Death as a monk on a copy of the Sunday edition of the New York Times, showcasing the current trend of news stories about monks lighting themselves on fire in protest against the Chinese Government.

"I’m ashamed of the indifference we show towards countries that we cannot overthrow. We are only moral in actions we can win” states Lydia Emily, Street Artist.

As the daughter of well-known civil rights protesters, activism runs in her blood. Lydia Emily is an artist who has a classical background in fine arts. She adheres faithfully to the idea of nonviolent protests & that people are more than a group of terrified by-standers;  given enough encouragement everyone can make a difference in the world. She embodies in her art the belief that being in the public eye comes with bgreoth at responsibility and the duty to speak out.

Monks from the Los Angeles Thubten Dhargye Ling Buddhist Temple will start the night off by blessing the exhibit opening at 8PM on March 15th, 2012. The Thubten Dhargye Ling Temple is a Buddhist center within the Gelugpa tradition headed by H.H.Dalai Lama and H.E. Kyabje Lati Rinpoche based in Long Beach, CA. Thubten Dhargye Ling will play host to H.H. Dalai Lama during his April 2012 visit to the United States.
