Patricia Stump, shares her two-bedroom apartment with her mother, and Mia, a Pomeranian-Poodle mix. She explains that the pet-friendly policy was a key factor in her decision to relocate from Staten Island. "I looked at retirement villages but when I saw Heritage Village I was really impressed. It's quiet, wooded, and there are still pristine areas in Lacey Township."
"Pet ownership brings companionship and social benefits," said Property Manager Melissa Haupt. "Pets can not only improve an owner's well-being but also encourage social interaction with neighbors."
Patricia agrees that her three-year-old dog has made it easier for her to meet people in her new community. "Mia is extremely friendly," she said. "She greets everyone in the building, and they've come to know her and love her."
"Many people have pets and they don't want to move and lose one of the members of their family," said Haupt. About 15 percent of the tenants have pets; the vast majority of them are dogs.
Roseann Sparta has had Jingles for 14 years, and couldn't imagine making a move to her new digs without her family's dog. "I looked at another place in Jackson that was nice but there were no pets allowed whatsoever. This place is so beautiful and it has so much to offer."
There's plenty of open space with nearby beaches, parks, marinas, and walking trails for dog walking. Residents at the active adult community also enjoy a long list of recreational activities and amenities including a community room, fitness center, health and wellness center, computer center, library, and laundry facilities.
Patricia also enjoys the diversity of the tenant population. "There are all different kinds of people living here," she added. "They do pot-luck dinners, card night, book clubs so we have lots of different things to look forward to."

Several pet-owning tenants who are elderly or live alone have a compelling need for feline or canine companionship. Patricia explains that Mia is a comfort to her mother, Laura Mattei who is 102 years old. "She doesn't socialize much so I got the pooch to keep her company. It's been great for her health. Her blood pressure has dropped remarkably and it gives her something to look after. The dog adores her."
Health professionals agree that whether it's helping older adults live longer, feel less lonely or more secure, the relationship between a pet and its owner can be powerful and healing. In fact, The Pets for the Elderly Foundation, a non-profit charity, claims that elderly persons with pets report 21 percent fewer visits to the doctor.

There is a one-pet limit, and the total weight must be no more than 25 pounds. The required deposit is a one-time $300, but management offers pet owners the option of a payment plan.
