As the cost of energy rises everything has a cost when you need to heat up water for tea or coffee and seeing that most people use their kettle every day the cost of boiling the kettle over the year can start to add up.  Most kettles are around 3000W, and it takes on average about 4 minutes to boil, so it takes around 3-5 pence to boil a full kettle each time, which over a year starts to add up to the overall cost of your energy needs. The way to work out the cost is done by using this simple formula, W * H * R, W = watts of appliance, H = hours of consumption, R = electricity rate (how much you pay).

Its not just the cost of the energy that people are concerned with but in more recent times people are interested in their carbon footprint as well as the effects that modern energy use is having on our environment and planet earth.  People have started to take into consideration of the cost of energy use, as well as the effects they are having on our environment and that’s why people are starting to buy Eco kettles, which have features to use less energy as well as making a positive contribution to climate change. Many energy saving trusts and charities are also labelling Eco friendly kettles as better for the environment, the Energy Saving Trust has labelled these kettles as Eco friendly.

Many governments, councils and agencies offer good advice and tips on how to save water, energy and resources when boiling water in a kettle. The main advice is to use and energy efficient Eco kettle and to only boil the water you need, so to save electricity and also water. The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have quantified how important this is with the following statement: "If everyone boiled only the water they needed to make a cup of tea instead of 'filling' the kettle every time, we could save enough electricity to run practically all the street lighting in the U.K."

Eco Kettles - Tips for Saving Money

Only boil what you need. This is an obvious one, if you're making a 2 cup pot of tea, only put 2 cups of water in the kettle, http://www.idealkettle.co.uk. There's no point boiling more water than you need. It will take longer, and it will use more energy. Many Eco kettles have cup indicators, and will tell you how much water to boil for one cup of tea or coffee.

Use an energy saving kettle, with an efficient heating element.
Virtually all the cost of boiling water is used up the heating element in the kettle, by choosing an energy efficient Eco kettle will be more efficient when boiling water, another improvement in energy use is to find out what type of material the kettle is made out of, some plastics have better thermal properties than say metal kettles.

Do not boil water if you do not have too.
Many hot drinks taste better when you do not bring the water to 100 Celsius, I.e some green teas are recommended to heat the water to between 70 and 80 Celsius, thus saving you the energy it would take you to 100 Celsius.  Many modern Eco kettles have temperature settings, such as 60 C, 80C and 100C for the different types of drink.

Energy efficient kettles can be found across all types of kettles, the full range of Eco kettles includes:
